Gesture & etiquette
Use open palm to gesture direction, never index finger pointing. If they look uncertain, offer to walk them part of the way: 「途中までご一緒しましょうか？」. Smile and bow lightly when they thank you.
Polite directions to a stranger. 「~ていただきますと」 (if you would do...) is humble conditional. 「左手」 and 「右手」 (left hand, right hand) are softer than 「左側」「右側」 in formal address. Always confirm by repeating: 「次の信号を右、左手ですね」.
