Gesture & etiquette
Stand with everyone, hold glass at chest level. After 「乾杯!」, briefly clink with nearest 2-3 people, including the honoree. Lower your glass slightly when clinking with seniors. Take a sip (do not chug). The party then commences with eating and conversation.
Farewell party toast. 「新たな門出」 (new departure) is the standard celebratory phrase for transfers, promotions, retirements—anything forward-looking. The toaster (幹事 or boss) initiates after a brief speech. Everyone clinks glasses—lower your glass slightly when clinking with someone senior to you (subtle hierarchy gesture).
