Gesture & etiquette
If discussing at a mountain site (e.g., Kumano), gesture toward peaks with respectful open palm. Mime blowing a conch (法螺貝) lightly to illustrate. Speak with reverent tone—mountains are sacred in Japan, casual talk inappropriate.
Shugendo originated in 7th-century with En no Gyoja. Practitioners (山伏 yamabushi) undertake mountain austerities to achieve enlightenment. Famous training mountains: Yoshino, Omine, Kumano, Haguro, Hiko. Yamabushi wear distinctive white robes, small black caps (tokin), conch shell trumpets (法螺貝), and beads. Banned in Meiji 1872, revived post-war.
