Gesture & etiquette
Sit upright at 45-90 degrees. Show catheter tip briefly. Insert smoothly, no fishing motion. Suction during withdrawal only, max 15 seconds. Watch face for distress. Rinse mouth with damp swab afterward. Comfort by stroking shoulder gently: 「お疲れさまでした、よく頑張りましたね」.
Suction (痰吸引) is uncomfortable and stressful for residents. 「お喉をきれいにさせていただく」 frames the procedure gently rather than the clinical 「痰を吸引する」. Promise of relief 「すぐ楽になりますよ」 motivates cooperation. Sterile catheter, brief insertion (max 15 seconds), suction during withdrawal only.
