Splitting the bill by individual items (kobetsu kaikei) is often not possible in Japanese restaurants, especially izakayas, due to the system. "Warikan" (even split) or "betsu kaikei" (separate checks for different groups/tables) are more common, but still not always offered. Be prepared for refusal.
