In some very small or busy establishments, splitting bills might be inconvenient for the staff. Be prepared to pay together if they decline. Asking '割り勘 (warikan)' implies splitting evenly, while '別々に (betsubetsu ni)' means paying individually for what each person had, which is usually easier for staff.
