Gesture & etiquette

Receive the card with both hands, fingers on edges, slight bow. Read it carefully for 3-5 seconds while still bowing slightly. Place it on the table in front of you, face up. Never put it in your wallet immediately — wait until the meeting ends.

Choudai itashimasu is the most respectful way to say 'I receive' — more formal than itadakimasu for objects. Read the card carefully after receiving it; placing it face-down or writing on it in front of the giver is a serious faux pas. At the table, arrange received cards in order of seniority.
