Gesture & etiquette
Lean slightly forward, make soft and sustained eye contact, and nod gently. Allow a pause after speaking — this creates space for them to continue sharing or change the subject at their own pace. Do not rush to fill the silence with solutions.
Japanese emotional support often expresses empathy through acknowledgment rather than advice. Simply saying 'that must have been difficult' — and then listening — is more valued than offering solutions. Avoid immediately suggesting 'you should have...' which can feel dismissive of their experience.
