Gesture & etiquette

Lower your voice and lean slightly forward — this creates an intimate, private conversational space. Maintain warm, non-judgmental eye contact throughout. Whatever they share, receive it with genuine gratitude: '話してくれてありがとう' (Thank you for telling me).

Honne' (本音) is one's true feelings, often kept private; 'tatemae' (建前) is the polite public stance shown in social situations. Explicitly inviting honne is a signal of deep trust — it tells the other person it's safe to be honest. This phrase only works when the relationship already has genuine trust as a foundation.
