Gesture & etiquette

Make calm eye contact while speaking. Position yourself so you are in the senior's field of view. Ask them to relax the arm or area, and remind them to breathe normally. After completion: 'Owarimashita. Yoku gaman dekimashita ne' (All done. You did so well).

チクッとする' (chikutto suru) is the standard onomatopoeic phrase for the sensation of an injection or blood draw — familiar and gentle. Honest preparation ('might feel a little prick') combined with reassurance ('it will be over quickly') reduces anxiety and builds trust far more than false promises that 'it won't hurt at all.'
