Gesture & etiquette
Position the wheelchair at the appropriate angle before asking. Maintain a calm, unhurried posture — rushing a wheelchair transfer causes anxiety. After they are seated, check comfort: 「足元は大丈夫ですか?」(Are your feet comfortable?).
Always ask before physically assisting someone into a wheelchair — approaching without asking can feel alarming. 「〜しましょうか?」(shall I...?) preserves their choice. Announce your movements before making them: 「それでは、後ろに引きますね」(I'll pull back now) so they're never startled.
