Gesture & etiquette
Gather your belongings before saying this phrase — say it at the door or just inside the entrance (genkan), not from the middle of the room. Bow at 20-30 degrees. If the host walks you to the door or elevator, wait until the door closes before walking away — leaving while they are still visible is considered abrupt.
The phrase 'ojama shimashita' (I have been a bother/guest) is said upon leaving someone's home — not upon arrival. It acknowledges that your presence was an intrusion on their space, which is considered humble and respectful in Japan. Saying it at the door, paired with 'arigatou gozaimashita', is the complete and correct farewell sequence for Japanese home visits.
