I'm going to put in your eye drops now. Could you look slightly upward? I'll gently pull down your eyelid.

Gesture & etiquette

Approach from the front with the eye drop bottle visibly in your hand — no surprises near the eyes. Ask them to tilt their chin slightly upward. Use your non-dominant hand to gently hold the lower eyelid. Hold the bottle above the eye without touching it. After the drop, gently close their eye and hold it closed for a few seconds. Praise their cooperation: 'Jouzu deshita!' (Well done!).

For eye drop administration, narrating each step before doing it prevents startle responses — particularly important for people with hearing difficulties who may not hear quiet movements. 'Karuku hikimasu' (gently pulling) prepares them for the sensation. Always close the eye gently after instillation and advise them to keep it closed for a moment for best absorption.
