Gesture & etiquette
Turn fully toward the person; make soft eye contact; nod slowly as they speak; avoid immediately offering solutions — keep your body language open and unhurried; allow comfortable silences.
In Japan, immediately offering solutions can feel invalidating — simply saying 'つらかったと思います' (I think you've been through something hard) and offering open-ended support is the appropriate empathy response; being heard ('聞いてもらう') is often more valued than receiving advice.
