Gesture & etiquette
Point gently to one location, wait for a response, then point to another area. Use your fingertip lightly — never press directly on an area that might be injured. Maintain a calm, concerned expression throughout.
When assessing pain in a senior, pointing physically and offering location choices (「ここ?それともこちら?」) is far more effective than abstract questions alone. Seniors with limited mobility or word-finding difficulty can respond with a nod, gesture, or single word.
