Gesture & etiquette
Receive with both hands, card held at chest height. Eyes on the card for 2-3 seconds to acknowledge the name. Then look up and address the person by name. Slight bow (30 degrees) while saying 'yoroshiku onegai itashimasu.' Place the card on the table in front of you, aligned to the seating order.
Receiving a business card (meishi) requires precise ritual in Japan. 'Choudai itashimasu' (I humbly receive) is said while accepting with both hands, name facing you, thumbs not covering the name or logo. Read the name silently, address the person by surname + sama (or -san in less formal cases), and place the card on the table during the meeting — never directly into your pocket. Never write on a meishi in front of the giver.
