Gesture & etiquette
Stand or sit calmly beside them. Soft smile. Place hand gently on their forearm if rapport allows. Have a small notepad ready with their recent symptoms documented. When the doctor arrives, gently prompt: 'kinou no koto, sensei ni oshiete sashiagete kudasai' (please tell the doctor about yesterday).
Medical visits can intimidate seniors — fear of forgetting symptoms, worry about asking questions, anxiety about results. Reassuring that you'll co-advocate ('watashi kara mo otsutae shimasu') reduces this load. Many seniors withhold symptoms from doctors out of pride or fear; the caregiver acting as gentle relay can capture what would otherwise go unsaid. Take written notes beforehand.
