Gesture & etiquette
Remove your coat and shoes at the entrance before saying 「お邪魔します」. Hold the gift with both hands, label facing recipient, slight bow as you offer. Wait for the host to take it; do not place it on the floor yourself.
Classic Japanese gift-giving humility. 「つまらないものですが」 (this is a trifling thing) is the customary downplaying—the gift itself can be quite nice. Modern younger generations sometimes prefer 「お気に召せばうれしいです」 (I hope you'll like it). Choose seasonal sweets or regional specialties, individually wrapped for sharing.
