Gently gesture towards the area where the tattoo might be, or make a palm-sized motion with your hand.
Tattoos are often associated with yakuza or criminal organizations in Japan, and many public baths have strict "no tattoo" policies. Always ask politely beforehand. Covering small tattoos is often accepted if you ask.
