Move quickly but enter the room calmly. Use a small torch or low light first, then dim overhead light. Crouch to eye level immediately. Place your hand lightly on the call-button or nearby surface so the senior sees you are prepared to act.
Arriving promptly and announcing yourself immediately ('I'm here') is the most reassuring thing in a nighttime emergency. Keep your voice calm and low — the senior is often disoriented and a loud voice amplifies anxiety. Turn on the lowest light available rather than the full overhead light.
