Gesture & etiquette

Kneel or crouch immediately to be at their level. Make steady, calm eye contact. Place one hand gently on their shoulder if culturally appropriate and they appear to welcome touch. Do not rush to lift them — assess first, call for help, then act.

In an emergency, your calm presence is as important as any action. Do not move a person who has fallen — call for assistance first while staying with them. Speaking reassuringly prevents panic and helps the senior stay calm until help arrives.
