Point to the IC card reader on the locker, then hold up your wallet or show cash.
Modern lockers often only accept IC cards (like Suica or Pasmo). Look for signs indicating '現金 (genkin - cash)' for cash-operated lockers. If a locker seems full, you might ask '空いているロッカーはありますか？ (Aite iru rokkā wa arimasu ka? - Are there any available lockers?)'
