Gesture & etiquette

Lower your body to eye level; keep your voice slow and gentle; make soft, steady eye contact without staring; place one hand near (not on) theirs as an available anchor; stay until their breathing slows and eye contact becomes more focused.

When a senior is confused or distressed, calm physical presence is far more effective than explanation or orientation questions ('今は何月ですか?'). Speak slowly, softly, and clearly. Avoid grabbing or restraining — gently place your hand on theirs only if they're comfortable with touch. Your steady composure is the primary signal of safety.
