Gesture & etiquette

Move close and make steady, reassuring eye contact. A brief, gentle touch on the arm (if welcomed) reinforces the 'I hear you' message. Speak at the person's level — kneeling if they are in bed or a wheelchair.

Acknowledging pain with 「わかりました」before taking action is crucial — it tells the person they have been heard, which immediately reduces distress. Never move straight to problem-solving without this acknowledgment step. Speak calmly and keep eye contact throughout.
