Gesture & etiquette
Kneel or sit to bring yourself to the person's eye level — never stand over them. Speak in a low, unhurried tone. If safe and welcomed, place one hand gently on theirs. Maintain eye contact with a calm, steady expression — avoid wide eyes or furrowed brows that signal alarm. Stay present; do not rush away immediately after saying the phrase.
When a resident is confused or distressed, the caregiver's tone of voice matters far more than the words themselves. Speak softly and slowly. The three reassurances — you're safe, this place is safe, I'm here — address the core fears (personal safety, environmental safety, not being alone). Avoid arguing with any misperception; simply offer calm, steady presence.
