Gesture & etiquette

Kneel immediately to their level the moment you reach them. Place one hand very gently on their shoulder without moving them. Maintain calm, steady eye contact. Speak in a clear, controlled voice — not panicked. Activate the call button or shout for colleagues immediately. Stay with them and keep talking reassuringly until help arrives.

If a resident falls, your first priority is preventing further movement which could worsen any injury — 'ugokanai de kudasai' communicates this clearly and calmly. The reassurance 'daijoubu desu ka' checks responsiveness. Always call for trained staff or emergency services immediately rather than attempting to lift the person yourself.
