Gesture & etiquette
Position yourself beside the person, slightly in front of them on their weaker side. Bend your knees — do not bend from your waist — to protect your own back. Place one hand at their elbow and one at their back as they rise. Speak throughout the transfer: 'Saa, yukkuri...' (Now, slowly...). Never rush a standing transfer. Confirm they are stable before releasing.
Observing difficulty before it is verbalized and offering immediate support ('watashi ga sasaemasu node' — I will support you) prevents falls and demonstrates active, attentive care. Always guide the person to grip the handrail or stable surface before the caregiver begins lifting — stability from a fixed point is safer than leaning entirely on the caregiver.
