Gesture & etiquette
Kneel or bend to their level immediately. Provide a tissue or clean cloth immediately. Gently demonstrate the head-forward position by modeling it yourself. Keep one hand ready to support their shoulder. Time the nosebleed — if it continues beyond 10-15 minutes or recurs repeatedly, contact medical staff. Keep your own expression calm and reassuring throughout.
For nosebleeds, tilting the head slightly forward (not backward — a common mistake) prevents blood from flowing down the throat. The instruction to breathe through the mouth ensures airflow is maintained. Deliver this guidance calmly and clearly — panicking about visible blood is natural but a calm caregiver voice significantly reduces the person's own distress.
