Gesture & etiquette
Crouch or sit at eye level. Place hand gently on theirs for reassurance (if culturally appropriate for that senior). Maintain calm steady voice — your tone signals 'this is manageable, I'm here.' Note any indicated body region with light hand gesture so they don't have to repeat themselves.
When a senior shows signs of distress, ask open and permission-granting questions. Many seniors underreport symptoms to avoid 'bothering' caregivers. 'Muri sezu' (don't push yourself / don't hold back) explicitly invites honesty. The soft 'ne' at the end maintains calm. Listen carefully — vague answers like 'chotto' (a little) often mean significant pain.
