Gesture & etiquette
Immediately approach and crouch beside them at eye level. Gentle but firm hand on their back to support the forward lean. Speak slowly and clearly — your calm voice lowers their panic-induced muscle tension. Have a small cup of water ready in case they recover. Call for help if no improvement in 10-15 seconds.
Choking (gouen) on food or saliva is a major risk for seniors, often leading to aspiration pneumonia. First-response training: keep them calm, lean forward (gravity assists), encourage coughing — the body's natural clearing reflex. Do NOT pat their back hard (can drive material deeper). If they cannot cough or breathe, call emergency services and prepare for Heimlich-style maneuver. Document every event for medical staff review.
